Hey ho! My name is Angelina (feel free to call me Angel) and I am 21 this year! 🙂 It is currently 8:07pm and I am listening to ‘Truth Is’ by Sabrina Claudio with a scented candle in my humble space as I type and unwind for the day.
I graduated in May 2019 from Republic Polytechnic with a Diploma in Biomedical Science. I loved school life.

To be frank, I didn’t know what degree i wanted to pursue after i graduated hence i decided to take a gap year to ponder and try new things! I travelled overseas and worked at an Açaí cafe.

Apart from work and travelling, I dedicated time to my hobby. Dance. I joined productions and competitions. Training’s were tough and friendships were created in the process.

I think that BCM110 will play an important role in my future endeavour as well as in everyday life.
Almost everyone in the train are on their phones, reading the news or catching up their latest episode of their favourite Netflix series. The development of media technologies has certainly created a lot of convenience to human, however this had led to the behavioural changes over the years. For instance, the media has been heavily blamed for the rise in mental disorders such as depression and body image issues in teenagers. As they scroll through Tumblr sites and also watch their favourite Hollywood movie, they start to question themselves why don’t they look like that? They have been presented the ideal standard of how an individual should look like and if you do not fit into this standard, you will be considered weird. This harsh standard, has forced many to fall into unhealthy mindsets. I was a victim a few years back as I had very bad self-esteem issues and I thought that slitting my wrists were considered as ‘beautiful’. I am lucky to have good teachers and friends around me who were constantly there for me educating me that it is okay to not fall into online standards and that we shouldn’t compare ourselves to what we see online as pictures and facts may be altered.
I would like to continue my further studies in Psychology, and I will be relying on a lot of information that can be found online to help me in my schoolwork. Hence BCM110 will allow me to question what I read and see online and do a thorough research on the sources that I choose.
Hola Angeline!
Cheers to your first post. Great photographs captured at Korea and Taiwan. The envious part of me would like to visit Korean soon.
I agree with you that media, specifically social media has set an ideal standard not only for beauty but also for lifestyle. Indeed, we need a constant reminder that the content posted often does not reflect reality. I had adopted ‘social media cleansing’ sometimes during holidays. While you might have a fear of missing out on new trends or connecting with your friends, periodic break from social media can improve our overall mental health.
I look forward to your future blogpost and insight.

hi angel!!
i’m so glad that we can be classmates again!! I can see that you had a lot of fun during your break! I also took a gap year and learnt many new things, mind sharing what you have learnt during your gap year? and whether you think taking a gap year is essential! I share the same view as you with regards to how the media badly portrays the ideal standard of the body which could result in body dysmorphia among females and teens, what do you think the media or other people can do to prevent this or alleviate the problem?
i look forward to seeing you in class soon! 🙂

Hi Angel!! It seems happy to have a year of break! We people in Hong Kong have very packed schedule and we are all rushing to graduate from university and get a job! I was forced to think of my future career during secondary school but actually I didn’t have any idea! It’s glad to see you have a hobby. I really don’t have a hobby at this moment and I have never tried to be very passionate into one thing. I hope I would be able to find my hobby someday haha. btw I ADMIRE dancers as I cannot dance!!
The advanced technology helps people but also harms people. I am sorry to hear that you had suffered but luckily you aren’t falling into those “online traps” anymore. There may still be people suffering because of those “standard”. I believe that studying more about media can help us figure out the root cause and find ways to help those people.

Hi Angel!!! So glad to a fellow RP alumni in the same course! It’s really good to travel the world whenever you can and experience new things! It’s also always good to invest time in the doing the things you love. I really admire your dedication for dance and am so proud of what you have achieved!!
On a more serious note, I agree with your statement that media technology has a behavioural impact on users over the years. The media has been portraying certain ways of how people should look like and how they should life their lives and if they don’t fit in that particular category, they are not deemed as beautiful.
All in all, I really enjoyed reading your blog posts and am looking forward to seeing you in classes soon! Cheers!
